【ニューヨーク市立大学病院の壁の落書きの詩】

大きな事を成し遂げるために
力を与えてほしいと神に求めたら
謙遜を学ぶようにと弱さを授かった。

より偉大なことができるようにと健康を求めたのに
より良きことができるようにと病弱を与えられた。

幸せになろうとして富を求めたのに
賢明であるようにと貧困を授かった。

世の中の人々の賞賛を得ようとして成功を求めたのに
得意にならないようにと失敗を授かった。

人生を享楽しようとあらゆるものを求めたのに
あらゆることを喜べるようにといのちを授かった。

求めたものは一つとして与えられなかったが
願いはすべて聞き届けられた。

神の意に添わぬ者であるにもかかわらず
心の中で言い表せないものはすべて与えられた。

私はあらゆる人の中でもっとも豊かに祝福されていたのだ

I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.

I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for—but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed!
